Two scientists of IOB are among the winners of the Emerging Neuroscientists Seminar Series (ENSS) 2021!

The Sainsbury Wellcome Centre for Neural Circuits and Behaviour (SWC) have launched the Emerging Neuroscientists Seminar Series (ENSS) in 2018 to give aspiring leaders in neuroscience the opportunity to present their research and to exchange with other world-leading scientists.

Arjun Bharioke and Martin Munz from the IOB have been selected to give one of the talks in the series. They will give a seminar on their research: “Synchronous activity in the recurrent network of cortical layer 5: Unconsciousness and development” on January 20, 2022, in London.

Their work focuses on the changes in spontaneous activity within layer 5 of cortex. Layer 5 is a central component of processing in the brain, constituting the major output from cortex, and has a unique, highly connected network structure. Using their combined theoretical and experimental expertise, Arjun and Martin explored both the development of layer 5, as well as its role during unconsciousness.

Congratulations to Arjun Bharioke and Martin Munz for this achievement.

The other winners of the ENSS 2021 are:

  • Dr Zahid Padamsey, Centre of Discovery Brain Sciences, University of Edinburgh: ‘How the neocortex saves energy by reducing its coding precision during food scarcity’
  • Dr Shin Kira, Harvard Medical School: ‘Mixed representations of memory and visual information for flexible navigation decisions’
  • Dr Kevin M. Cury, Columbia University in the City of New York: ‘Decisions in an innate behavioural sequence’
